Series: The Black Wolves of Boston, Book 1
Length: 18 hrs and 15 mins

My Rating: 5.0 of 5.0 Overall; Story 5.0; Narration 5.0.

Publisher's Summary
From the Romantic Times Sapphire award-winning author of the internationally best-selling Elfhome series.
Rebuild a life, save a city
Silas Decker had his world destroyed when he was attacked by vampires outside of New Amsterdam. He has rebuilt his life a dozen times in the last 300 years - each time less and less successfully. Now he lives alone, buried under a hoarding habit, struggling to find some reason to wake up with the setting of the sun.
Eloise is a Virtue, pledged to hunting evil. What she doesn't know is how to live alone in a city full of strangers who know nothing about monsters.
Seth is the 16-year old Prince of Boston, ward of the Wolf King. Now he is left in a city that desperately needs his protection with enemies gathering all around.
Joshua believes he is a normal, college-bound high school senior. His life is shattered when he wakes up in a field, covered with blood, and the prom committee scattered in pieces about him like broken dolls.
These four must now come together to unravel a plot by Wickers, witches who gain power from human sacrifices and have the power to turn any human into their puppet. Four people who lost everything struggle to save Boston by saving each other.

Review:
Joshua senses his dreams of college are disappearing as he ran away from home after being bitten by a werewolf. He knows that his new strength is posing a danger to his family and neighbors, so he has followed whispered advice to ‘go to Boston’s Prince’. He finds himself alone, homeless, and hungry running into trees as he chases rabbits in the woods of Boston at night. He soon realizes he isn’t alone when a young man challenges his bizarre behavior. Joshua doesn’t recognize his new friend, Silas Decker, as a vampire until Joshua joins him to help Elise, a Grigori Virtue (a magical religious guardian/assassin) fight off a huntsman and hounds. This all takes place in the first chapter and the book takes off from there.

Decker and Elise decide they need to protect this new wolf who has no idea what is going on. Decker’s home is a tightly held secret, so Joshua goes home with him where he discovers his new friend is a serious hoarder who has given up interest in life. As Joshua plans to clear out the trash and newspapers, Decker finds that he is thrilled with the adorable new werewolf pup.

Meanwhile, the Prince of Boston, 16-year-old Seth, has just arrived in New York looking for the rest of the wolf clan. The wolves have not been in Boston for years due to dangers of magical breaches allowing other monsters into the area. Seth has a sad childhood full of loss and responsibility. He is torn in his duties to protect his clan and to take care of a newly formed wolf.

This story does have a somewhat convoluted history of the wolves and the Grigor joining as allies against enemy witches or Wickers who created stick and vine constructs using human hearts and parts. The history of the conflict unfolds between the action-packed scenes where the protagonists are fighting for their lives. The story is told from the different viewpoints of Joshua, Decker, Elise, and Seth. The author uses this style to keep interest and move the story along at a good pace. There is humor and warmth as the friendships among the characters develop. All four of the protagonists have a reason to be seeking the comfort of family, even if it is one made of friends.

I stumbled on this book in an Audible sale, and I am so glad I chose it. It fulfilled my expectation as a good fantasy with a vampire, wolves, and magical hunter working together. My only disappointment is that there aren’t more books in the series. I will be hunting for other works by Ms. Spencer. I highly recommend this story to fans of urban fantasy with characters you care for.

Audio Notes: The work is performed by multiple talented narrators: Ian Alan Carlsen, Corey Gagne, J. Paul Guimont, Jennywren Walker. They shared the characters with empathy and humor. I totally enjoyed the audio and will look for other works performed by these narrators.

About This Audible Original
Their house guest is beautiful and charming, but she carries a dark secret—one that could prove deadly. It’s time for gothic horror fans to sink their teeth into one of the very first vampire thrillers ever written. David Tennant (Doctor Who, Harry Potter), Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death), and Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones, Downtown Abbey) breathe new life into J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic horror story, Carmilla.
It all begins when Laura’s widowed father finds Carmilla stranded in the forest after a carriage accident and takes her in. The young women develop a fast friendship which turns into a passionate meeting of souls. A relationship of vampire and prey, the story is told through Laura’s eyes as she is drawn further into Carmilla’s terrifying world of pleasure and pain.
A masterpiece of erotic gothic horror, Carmilla encompasses mystery, suspense, forbidden lust, violence...and blood. This audio adaptation of Carmilla has been dramatized by Robin Brooks, an actor, dramatist, and author who has been working as a playwright for over 25 years. Carmilla was directed by Fiona McAlpine of Allegra Productions for Audible Originals. David Tennant, Phoebe Fox, and Rose Leslie bring their talent and gravitas to this Audie nominated performance (Original Work), making it an exhilarating listening experience.

Review:

Laura is a lovely young woman who is secluded at home with her protective father. When a carriage breaks down not far from their schloss (castle in Austria), Laura’s father is persuaded to take in the woman’s ethereal daughter who appears unwell. Carmilla is near Laura’s age and the two girls grow closer. Laura is intrigued by Carmilla’s advances even as she is slightly uncomfortable with them. No one in the household seems to see the danger in the relationship until Laura begins to grow more and more languid and Carmilla begins to go missing from her room. Even then the danger isn’t clear until a neighbor, who lost his beloved daughter, shares his experience.

This is a twisty vampiric, erotic, gothic novel. Isn’t that a mix? I like the ghostly and vampire quality as well as the dark gothic setting. The full story made me curious about the history and this is what I found:
“Carmilla is an 1872 Gothic novella by Irish author Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the early works of vampire fiction, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) by 26 years.”
Similar to Laura, I found the story engaging and repelling at the same time. I recommend this quick read/listen to serious vintage fans, vampire fans and those who enjoy a touch of horror.

Audio Notes:
This is a dramatic presentation that pulled me into the dark atmosphere which is conveyed by all of the narrators. The narration is a bit of a treat itself and made this book an extra special gem in my October horror reading/listening.

Book Description
Publication Date: August 11, 2009
Sarah Dearly's vampire life is not all B-positive cocktails. A curse made her a nightwalker, the most vicious vamp there is; the charm she wears to curb her deadly tendencies is losing its juice; and a hunter from hell is turning up the heat. Gideon Chase will kill the ones she loves most if she doesn't obey his orders. That includes breaking up with master vampire Thierry and turning Gideon into an immortal vamp so he can escape a doom of eternal hellfire.

Making things worse are Sarah's growing feelings for Gideon, a bad boy who keeps showing a vulnerable side . . . but is it for real? Will Sarah's dark side take over? Or can she cure herself of the nightwalker curse in time to stop Gideon and finally live happily ever after with Thierry . . . forever?

Review:
Sarah Dearly has only been a vampire for a few months but they have been busy months. She has escaped the vampire hunters at least twice and fallen in love with a somber, dark master vampire, Thierry. Escaping vampire hunters has given Sarah a reputation as the Slayer of Slayers. An unpleasant encounter with a witch got her cursed as a nightwalker which means she can’t walk in sunlight and she has an uncontrollable craving to feast on real, living blood. Sarah wears a heavy gold charm on a chain to help control the curse. Others are worried that the charm will weaken so the vampire counsel is talking about killing Sarah.

Another complication in Sarah’s life is that a vampire hunter, Gideon, has been burned by hellfire and is in extreme pain. Gideon has threatened all of Sarah’s loved ones if she doesn’t perform a ritual turning him into a vampire so he can escape the hellfire. Although most of Sarah’s friends try to convince her Gideon is an evil enemy, she has a tendency to have compassion for everyone, even Gideon in his pain.

Sarah and Thierry think they have found true love even though his long time estranged wife, Veronique, has refused an annulment. Sarah and Thierry have told their friends they have broken off their relationship as a means to protect Thierry from Gideon’s threat. Gideon has promised her a spell to remove the nightwalker curse if she will betray the Red Devil to him. Currently Sarah is hiding that she has become a “gopher” running errands for Gideon as she tries to determine whether it will be safe to turn him and how else she might get the spell to lift her curse. Thierry is suspicious of Sarah’s feelings for Gideon so he has convinced a dangerous vampire known as the Red Devil to come out of retirement after 100 years to spy on/protect Sarah.

Sarah has a very sassy and humorous attitude that makes the story fun and light. Unfortunately she makes me think of the stereotype ‘dumb blonde’ (regardless of true hair color) as she can’t make up her mind how to feel about Gideon, she doesn’t seek help from anyone and she continues to do things that she knows are dangerous and not good actions. I really found it rather difficult to like her and therefore hard to become fully engaged. There were some interesting characters including a teenage warlock who plays with spells and demons. I pushed on through, shaking my head at Sarah’s indecision and several improbable scenes.

My conclusion is this is a fun, light read even if it doesn’t make good sense. This series may not be for me but there are lots of positive reviews so plenty of readers apparently like the snarky fun.

I picked this from my "won" books.

Product Description
Anna Strong is trained for anything-until she's attacked one night, only to awaken in a dark world that exists between the living and the dead. Here, Anna struggles with her love for the two men who inhabit the realms of each: Max, a human DEA agent, and Avery, a Night Watcher who joins Anna in pursuit of the vampire who changed her life.

Now, as her two worlds collide, fate plunges Anna into the ultimate battle between good and evil where survival is not just for the living.
Review: An interesting vampire tale with a strong heroine.
Anna Strong is a bounty hunter with her equally strong partner, David. They can handle most anything but one night their target turns on them and she suffers an attack that changes her to a vampire. She doesn’t even know what happened until her handsome doctor, Avery, reveals her condition. He explains that she will need someone to show her the rules of the vampire society and he will be that person.  Anna resists the explanation and the training at first until she is attacked by a group of corrupt vampire hunters.  When she heals overnight she acknowledges that she is different and she doesn’t want to tell her partner or her lover, Max, what has happened.  She agrees to accept Avery’s help and mentoring.

Avery is an old vampire, wealthy doctor and respected suave man in the community.  He slowly seduces Anna, trying to convince her that he has waited years to find someone like her and that she is meant for him. Meanwhile, Anna’s home is burned down and David disappears.   Anna insists on trying to find David and protect him from the attacker who may have come back for him or her.  Avery calls in the Chief of Police to help answer questions but Avery's real attitude is that Anna needs to leave her past and the lowly humans behind her. Anna is torn between her growing attraction to Avery, her disquiet at Avery’s prejudice and her unsettled feelings that there is a conspiracy working that she needs to figure out.

I enjoyed the story which had a good plot and a good bit of action.  Anna’s character is strong and resilient. I liked her friend/partner David and would like to know more about Max. The story is told from the first person view point of Anna as she describes the circumstances that result in her “becoming” a vampire.  Unfortunately, I found the narration on the Audible to be very monotone and emotionless so it really put a damper on the characters and story. I may choose to read the second in the series to see if it overcomes the lack of emotion in the first book which may have been emphasized by the expressionless narration.  If you want to try this book I recommend reading the print version, not listening to the audio.
