Questions and Answers with Margaret Mallory, Author of Knight of Passion

Please help me welcome Margaret Mallory, author of Knight of Passion (All the King's Men), who has agreed to answer a few questions so we can get to know her better.

Q. In your article How I Became a Writer you say that as an author you can bend characters to your will; that you "... have to torture them in some way first. Perhaps repeatedly. But I'll reward them with a happy ending." Do you ever find that the characters bend you to their will or torture you?
MM: Mostly my characters torture each other. I spend so much time with them that I become really attached to them. Getting their stories on paper, however, can be tortuous. For me, writing the first draft can be painful.
Q. Can you estimate how many hours go into research and how many into writing your book(s)?
MM: I can't really divide up the time, because the research never ends. I find I'm constantly having to go back to check facts or look up something new while I'm writing.

For example, I spent hours this week researching poisons. The poison I needed for my story had to come from a plant that would have grown on the Isle of Skye in 1513 -- and it had to make the victims vomit, not kill them. Questions like that come up all the time... ;)
Q. When you began Knight of Desire did you already have the three book plots in mind for the All the Kings Men series? Did the story Knight of Passion flow easily from the first two books in the trilogy?
MM:  The hard part for me is ending a series. Each time I write a book, certain secondary characters come alive for me and beg for starring roles in their own books.
I wrote the books in ALL THE KING'S MEN one at a time, without a plan for the series. I'd never been published, so I didn't know if the first one would sell. When it did sell, the publisher wanted a two-book contract, which I think is fairly typical. After I turned in both manuscripts, they were interested in a third.
Writing the books one at a time worked well for me with this first series. For my next series, however, I wanted to take the opportunity to plan it all out ahead of time. I'm very excited to report that my publisher liked the proposal, so you'll be seeing more books from me.
Q. You have stated at your website that it was a surprise to change your career from lawyer to writer. How has your family reacted to the change in career? Are they supportive?
MM:  My children, who are now 20 and 22, are a bit embarrassed that I write books that have steamy love scenes and shirtless men on the covers. At my son's request, I cut out all the love scenes -- literally with scissors -- from his copy of my first book. It wasn't good enough to black out the offending pages; they had to be gone. I did it, but I warned him I couldn't possibly cut out all the pages where my characters are thinking about doing it. That may explain why he still hasn't read it.

Frankly, I wish my mother had not read my books. I have visions of her standing in the romance section of her local bookstore checking IDs to be sure no one underage picks them up.

Joking aside, my family and friends have been amazingly supportive of my unexpected career change. All the relatives pass out my bookmarks at their kids' soccer games and in the grocery store line.
Q. What time period is your next book series set in and can you expound a bit on the research you hope to do in Scotland for that series?
Knight of Passion (All the King's Men)MM:  I'm off to the Highlands! I'm working on a 4-book Scottish series that takes place on the Isle of Skye in 1513. After hearing of the disastrous Battle of Flodden against Henry VIII's forces, my four handsome Highlanders return from France to help their clan through the perilous times ahead. The four are willing to give their lives for their clan, but taking wives to further their clan's interests is another matter altogether...

I'm taking a trip to Scotland at the end of June to do research. Yay!!! I'm excited about seeing the Isle of Skye and various castles I'm using in the books. If the volcano in Iceland doesn't ruin my trip, I plan to Tweet and post photos on Facebook as I travel, June 24-July 5. I'll be in London the first day and hope to post photos of a couple places that are in KNIGHT OF PASSION. Follow me at: @MargaretMallory
Q. Have you had to learn any special steps/skills for promoting your books and career?
MM:  As your mother told you, be nice to everybody. It is also important to be reliable -- to meet your deadlines and commitments.

Promotion takes way more than I ever guessed! I try to remember, though, that the most important thing is to write the best books I can.
Thank you Ms. Mallory for sharing with us!
MM:  Thanks so much for having me! I'm happy to respond to comments or questions.

HOW CAN THIS PASSIONATE KNIGHT...
Renowned beauty Lady Linnet is torn between two desires: revenge on those who destroyed her family or marriage to her childhood sweetheart Sir James Rayburn. One fateful night, she makes a misguided choice: she sacrifices Jamie's love for a chance at vengeance.

TRUST A BEAUTY WITH A PAST?
Jamie Rayburn returns to England in search of a virtuous wife-only to find the lovely Linnet as bewitching as ever. Their reckless affair ignites anew, even hotter than before, although Jamie vows to never again trust her with his heart. Then just as Linnet begins to make amends, she's tempted by one last opportunity to settle old scores. But a final retribution could cost her Jamie's love - this time forever.
Review: This story contains lots of passion with some missteps and excitement along the way.

Lady Linnet is set on revenge and will do whatever it takes to find the men who betrayed her Grandfather.  She cannot forget hiding under the bed as the men stripped their house and left her and her twin brother, Francois, out in the cold to fend for themselves.  Linnet’s plans are to marry an elderly man and become a young, wealthy widow with the means to search out the men who destroyed her family. At sixteen she seduces her childhood sweetheart, Sir James, who is perfectly willing because he is in love and plans to marry this beautiful, rebellious temptress.  Jamie is stricken to learn Linnet has used him to tarnish herself to keep her father from making an unwanted marriage for her.

Sir James turns tail and heads out to war to become a fierce warrior knight. When he returns from battle five years later  he doesn’t plan on renewing an affair with Linnet but the passion between them flares hot.  Their manipulative dance picks up again as neither is willing to invest their hearts or let the other know their true feelings.

I had a lot of trouble enjoying the beginning of this story because I was very put off by Linnet’s flirtatious manipulations and her sexual relationship with Jamie. She practically flaunts her dishonesty as she purposefully leads him to believe the worst about her behavior. Linnet actually is a smart merchant and a good friend to the Queen but she has the tendency to use her beauty and sexual nature as a tool, ignoring the fact she is developing a few enemies.

Fortunately I am glad to say that the last 100 pages of this book saved the read for me. When Linnet gets kidnapped by the villains the story rushes on at a breath catching pace while you hope for her rescue!  I also enjoyed the history that is the backdrop for the story. Linnet is a close  friend to widowed Queen Katherine whose baby is a pawn in the royal household struggles  between the Duke of Gloucester and the Bishop of Winchester. The political posturing added additional intrigue to the story.

The writing flowed well and Ms. Mallory is to be commended on creating the complex character of Linnet. Once I got beyond Linnet’s flirtatious personality I did enjoy the book and recommend it especially to readers who enjoy the historical genre.

Blurb:

FEARLESS IN BATTLE

His surcoat still bloody from battle, William FitzAlan comes to claim the strategic borderlands granted to him by the king. One last prize awaits him at the castle gates: the lovely Lady Catherine Rayburn.

TENDER IN BED

Catherine risked everything to spy for the crown. Her reward? Her lands are declared forfeit and she is given this choice: marry FitzAlan or be taken to the Tower. Catherine agrees to give her handsome new husband her body, but she’s keeping secrets and dares not give him her heart. As passion ignites and danger closes in, Catherine and William must learn to trust in each other to save their marriage, their land, and their very lives.

REVIEW: This is a very wonderful and solid Historical Romance debut novel. I enjoyed this tale of intrigue and battle of wills.

Catherine is beautiful and resourceful. Although she didn’t kill him directly, Caroline’s spying resulted in the death of her brutal and cruel husband who was plotting against the King. However, she certainly didn’t expect to be forced to marry the man who defeated her husband in battle. And with her experiences she doesn’t trust any man, especially in the bedroom!

William FitzAlan is a truly honorable knight and not about to let a woman go to the Tower because of a traitorous husband. Once he meets the beautiful lady he is even more determined to marry her and get her into his bed. He just doesn’t think he will trust a woman who would plot against her own husband!

Catherine and William have plenty of issues jumping into this marriage! They also have a past that William recognizes but doesn’t catch the significance of till it’s pointed out to him and Catherine remembers but doesn’t connect to William. Add jealousy, betrayal and kidnapping and you will be plenty busy enjoying the battling romance and unraveling the intrigues!

I really like these two well developed characters. They are strong but vulnerable; smart in their areas (his war and hers the household and spying) but sort of slow dealing with each other! Neither wants to trust but someone is going to have to budge if they are going to make progress!
The betrayal seems easy to spot, although it could have been a red herring. Although the jealousy and betrayal by a trusted friend are not totally new plot lines, the author has added some extra elements that make the story different and interesting.

The reading flows well and moves quickly. I appreciate that the love scenes are sensual and sizzling without being graphic or offending in any way. I think this is a very good debut novel and I will want to read more in the series!
