Sharing Beyond Books #31 Comment Giveaway January 14, 2012

Hello again SBB fans! Sorry to be late tonight but the kids came over to share dinner and watch the playoffs so I couldn't get this up earlier.

Thank you for commenting last week, especially since I had a wrong link for the giveaway post last week.  Someone needs to nudge me when I do that. Sorry.

About 1/3 of us do not watch much TV at all.  Add a couple more who do not watch reality shows put the count at 7 who do not watch versus 12 who do watch reality TV.  Those that do watch seemed split between talent shows and bachelor or survivor type shows.

Surprisingly, the numbers were the same for making resolutions this year! 12 acknowledged making resolutions while 7 said no. However several of us who did not make resolutions agree that we may seek to make lifestyle changes. I like Llehn's attitude: if you want to accomplish something, then get to it! Heavensent1 was funny saying the only resolution she has kept was from 15 years ago - not to make any resolutions. :-)

WEEK #31 Questions

Q1. This week Abby asks:  If you could pick a favourite occupation (realistic or not) from a book, what would it be??
A:  Hmmm- I actually tried a Google search to help me think of and pick an answer to this.  I immediately thought of things like a kickin' demon killer or something like that... Then I thought twice.  As much as I like Eve Dallas (the In Death series) I don't think I'd want to be a female detective in a future NY. I kept thinking...Ahhh! I think I would like to be a special operative,  biblio-crimefighter (book detective) like Thursday Next! This reminds me I need to read more in this fun series.
This signage would only make sense if you are familiar with the series.

Q2. Here is my question: What influences your book buying the most?
Price, cover, author, format or other?

A:  There are certain authors that I will always check out their books but that doesn't mean I'll always buy right away. Generally I think I am initially drawn to a book by the author or by a cover but I have to admit that my buying decision is the price. It is a lot easier to buy a $5.99 Kindle ebook than a $9.99 one or a $6.99 mass paperback than a $14.95 trade book - even though I understand why those prices have to be as high as they are for indie presses and authors. And I love to get books at used prices - which doesn't even get a royalty back to the author, sad to say.  Also, like Birgit I download many free Kindle books with the hope that someday I might read them!

Thanks to those who are sending in Questions. DON'T BE SHY! Surely everyone has a Q or two you'd like to ask.  Input suggestions in this Suggested Question FormAt the end of each month I will draw from the suggestions I used the month before and that person will get a book choice or GC. I thank everyone for submitting questions but some of you others might want to get in a question or two as we have a few people submitting most of the questions so far.  Either way - it works for me. :-)  The question list is getting low so feel free to send in a Q or 2 or 4! Remember they don't all have to be book related. I'm going to be asking some other questions soon!

Your turn to share:

1. If you could pick a favourite occupation (realistic or not) from a book, what would it be??

2. What influences your book buying the most? Price, cover, author, format or other??

SBB Comment Winners can choose a selection from the remaining  Valentine and "Love" books or the remaining Christmas Giveaway Books - there are still about 12 books available plus 2 left in the Summer titles to choose from. Also I have added the Review and ARC Box now.

My copy is a paperback from 2006
with a different cover.

A Summer Affair (Calhoun Chronicles)

  1. 1. Anthropologist in a far away world. Oddly enough I did study Cultural and Social Anthropology as a minor because I was fascinated by it, but somehow I imagine it would be much more interesting to learn about an alien species (did I mention yet that I love Star Trek?). Oh and yes, in one of my fave books the heroine is an anthropologist stranded in a strange world.

    2. I guess ultimately it's about the price for me too. Obviously the author is important, yet even if I'm a fan I will usually buy new books only when they are out in paperback. Unless a hardcover is reduced I won't buy it as they are simply too expensive. Last but not least, I'm also a big fan of buying books used (and you're right, Martha, it's a shame that authors won't get more out of that than a new reader of their work).

P.S.: You had to mention my free download addiction, didn't you? ;-)

  2. 1) I would still like my orphanage work the best but if I could have been even a part time librarian would have been wonderful. The atmosphere of a library does something for me.

    2) For me personally its the availability. My buying is ninety nine percent of the time second hand so price is not really the issue. I have huge lists with me all the time so if its available I buy.

  3. 1. Please let me be a Guardian Angel!! I like the idea of watching over someone & keeping them safe. This is the reason we have a Christmas Angel on the top of our tree each year.

    2. My daughter. She is the one who tends to steer me in my book buying decisions. Not the price or covers or anything else. I guess she really does all this for me. Her reading tastes are eclectic & we buy books SHE believes we will all enjoy. Not far wrong I must say.

  4. I will have to say that I purchase books by the author. If it is an author that I really like, I will end of reading all of their books. I too, have a download addiction of free books. I can't control it. At least they are not all over my house.

  5. 1. I would love to be a historian like Diana Bishop in A Discovery of Witches - researching at Oxford sounds so fascinating.
    2. Cover is what catches my eye, but price really does determine if I will buy it or not.

  6. 1. I'm going to go with astronaut. I've always been fascinated with that entire job, NASA in general.
    2. I buy hardcovers at reduced prices, I'm more of a go-to-the-library to save money (college student here).

  7. Good Morning,
I would have to say I would love to have a book store and be around books all the time, love to read. I do think I have seen some books that have folks that sell books in them.
My reason for buying is an author I have read before and writes great stories plus price too.
I do get some from library and also yard sales in summertime.

  8. 1. I know it sounds pretty pedestrian, but I'd LOVE to own a book store, but one of the the small, neighborhood, independent stores that used to thrive. I can't think of anything better than spending my entire day reading books, selling books and talking about books!!

    2. When buying books, budgetary concerns DO play into my decisions, to a certain extent. There are certain authors that I buy the hardcover as soon as they're released (John Sandford & Lee Child, for example). Series that I follow I'll pay retail for the paperback. I also discover new series and authors at used books stores. Focusing on the new authors and series that I check out, as superficial as it sounds, a good cover gets my attention, then the blurb and the genre are what get me to the cash register. I love free ebooks (though I've purchased a couple), I still love corporeal books the best!

  9. 1. A shape-shifting private eye...or a zombie hunter~!!

    2. Hmmm...price, I'd have to say...the cover will draw me in but the price tag may chase me away...however, I will pay top dollar for a print copy book, if its something I truly need to read...most of my non-fiction books have to be bought for research purposes. I LOATHE eBooks...I read WAY too fast for them and they smell funny!! :P

  10. Boring, boring, boring, but I'd like to be a doctor...surgeon or maybe a private investigator.

As far as buying books...there are some that I buy just because of the author. Others I notice because of the cover, then I read the blurb, then I check the price and if the price makes it worth it I'll go for it. But, I confess to an awful lot of free kindle downloads so that must make me go by the cost (at least kindle-wise).

  11. I would love to be the host of a travel show. The author and blurb are what influences me to buy the book.

  12. 1. I would be a secret agent.
    2. The covers catch my eye first, but I buy books based on the summary and if it sounds like something I would be interested in reading.

  14. 1 i would like to be one of those who spend time studying and to whom the hero refer when he( she) needs information )^^ ( a bit like daly in the kate daniels worlds)

2: first it's a book from one of my favorite author i takle it. For new books/authors it's a mix it depends of the price but also of the review i've read ( cover is just a plus) so if i really fall in love with a book after a review the price will come second

    all the best

  15. 1. I always think that any type of special agent that deals with the paranormal world is a cool job to have.

    2. What influences my book buying the most would depend on whether I am familiar with an author or not. So I guess author would be the first influence because I would definitely be more inclined to buy books from an author I've read and enjoyed before. Other than that, then I would say a combination of the price, cover and blurb that also depends on which book it is.

  16. 1. mental patient. Not really a job, but then I'd have a lot of free time!

2.I buy books on 2 things-price, and how much I want it. Because then why else would I buy them? So those are the 2 factors that I consider :)

  18. When I was a little girl I read all of the Little House on the Prairie books and watched the show as well. I SO wanted to be Laura Ingalls. When she finally started teaching I was so excited because that was my dream job. I always wanted to be a teacher. I never decided to be a teacher, I always just knew. I guess you could say it was my calling. I wouldn't change that. I finally became a teacher, but unfortunately I was only able to teach for 14 years because I had an accident that left me permanently disabled. Not sure what my new calling is, but my little girl told me that I don't have to go to the "big school" to be a teacher, I was always going to be her teacher at home. Wow! Such profound wisdom from a 4 year old! I am sure that Laura Ingalls Wilder had an impact on many young girls and led them to teach as well. (Sorry so long!)
