Is that Cover REAL? Does it REALLY Matter?? [With Giveaway!]

I was planning on something else today but it just wasn't quite ready --- soon though!
As second choice I thought I might continue my "realism" theme one more week!! Here is today's question!

How "real" should the cover be?????
Does it every bother you if the cover doesn't match the book?
Do you feel deceived sometimes if you got pulled in by a cover and discover the book is nothing like that?

I can think of a few times when I was annoyed that the cover showed a blonde and the heroine was a brunette (or visa versa!).  And many times the clothes on the cover are not as described in the book. I like my covers to match the story!  I can think of a particular book where I think the cover looked VERY interesting but the story didn't match!  As a courtesy, I won't single it out.  But it was annoying because I would not have gotten the book for review except for the pretty cool looking, but ultimately misleading, cover.

One more point that is interesting - as I was looking for graphics for this post [does anyone know how time consuming that can get??] I found these two book covers on the topic of art and graphics.  What do you think??

Which catches your eye?? Which book would you be inclined to pick for information on graphic art??

DOES THE COVER REALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Again this week there will be a drawing from all comments made on this post - leave your e-mail please so I can reach you! I will draw a winner Friday morning to chose a book from the Friday Pick books!

  1. I think covers make a huge difference. Sure, I'm initially drawn to the flashy cover, but if I'm looking for a book on a serious subject, the more professional looking one is going to be the one I pay more attention to.

  2. It bothers me when the cover doesn't match what is in the book. I keep thinking someone should check things like this before it goes to the printer.

I like the second cover. It makes me feel that I will find all the info that I need.

  3. My eye strays to the more flashier cover but I would prefer to read the more professional cover.

  4. Although I love pictures and graphics, I think the cover on the left is too confusing. It doesn't really tell you what the book is about. I would pick the cover on the right.

  5. I think the cover on the right looks more professional, and I think the information would be more organized.
I too am annoyed when the cover doesn't match the novel.

  6. It is important to me that the cover match the book. After all, it is the cover you see first, and that either attracts you or it doesn't. In this case, however, I would pick the cover on the right. It's a book of info, and I'd like the cover to be as clear as possible.

  7. I, too, would pick the cover on the right for some good hard into but I was drawn to the colorful one first.

I love covers that are an art in and of themselves and am drawn to cover art; I dislike the cover not representing the story also. As mentioned, the hair color of the h or h should be as stated in the book or even a car color or animal.

  8. I like it when the cover matches the theme of the book. I don't want to be fooled into something that it's not.

  9. I think the cover should relate to the book, the title, the people should look like the characters, and it should draw you in. anything that doesn't match is silly, and people on the covers who don't look like the characters (Magic under Glass, The Heights, etc) is silly.

  10. I think covers make a huge difference - at least to the "saleability" of the book! It should relate in some way to the subject matter and when the cover is totally bizarre it puts one off.

I definitely think it is important that the book cover is somehow related to the story in some way. It just adds more to the whole experience.

  12. I try my best not to judge a book by its cover. Instead, I read the book's description on the back of the book or on one of the inside flaps! To me, book descriptions and reviews have always carried more weight than pictures or cover art.

That being said, if I had to judge one of the above books by its cover I would choose the one on the right. The cover design makes me feel that the book will cover the topic in an organized, thorough, and in depth manner.
